Tashkent plans to move parking spaces and vehicle access roads beyond the courtyards of multi-storey residential buildings. The space freed up under the proposal is intended for children’s playgrounds, sports facilities, green areas and places for recreation.
The changes are included in the “15-minute accessible environment” project. Its concept is to ensure that kindergartens, schools, polyclinics, everyday services and leisure areas can be reached within a 15-minute walk from home.
The plan also calls for shaded walking alleys and small parks in courtyards. Mahalla streets are expected to receive surveillance cameras and SOS buttons for calling for assistance.
Authorities intend to comprehensively upgrade 100 mahallas in the capital in 2027 and raise the total to 400 by 2030. However, the locations for parking facilities serving vehicles removed from courtyards have not yet been specified. Earlier plans called for the comprehensive renewal of four mahallas in Yashnabad district under the “15-minute mahalla” principle, including a walking alley, children’s playgrounds and new social facilities.
