The administration of US President Donald Trump has postponed a Friday meeting of the White House technology council. Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang and Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg had been expected to attend.
A US Department of Energy spokesperson said the Friday meeting of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology had been postponed. The department’s website listed November 13 as the new meeting date.
The decision followed a sharp drop in US technology stocks on Thursday. Selling was driven in part by concerns that a new Congress controlled by Democrats could slow developments in artificial intelligence.
Concerns that large-scale capital spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure may not deliver the expected returns also added to selling pressure. Market volatility led technology company executives in Silicon Valley and policymakers in Washington to follow developments in the sector more closely.
The independent council that advises Trump includes Huang and Zuckerberg, as well as AMD Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su, Oracle Chief Technology Officer Larry Ellison and Andreessen Horowitz co-founder Marc Andreessen. Venture capitalist David Sacks and White House technology adviser Michael Kratsios serve as co-chairs. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the reason for the postponement.
