Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev took part in a ceremony launching new projects in Bukhara region on 3 November. Construction is beginning on 90 projects with a combined value of $7.1 billion, while 55 additional facilities worth $654 million are being commissioned.
The region has formed a programme of 145 projects valued at a total of $7.8 billion. It covers petrochemicals, textiles, construction materials, machinery manufacturing, energy, mining, pharmaceuticals, digital technologies, logistics, agriculture, food production, construction and tourism. Investors from the United States, Canada, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, China, Vietnam, Türkiye, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Russia and India are involved, alongside international financial institutions and local entrepreneurs.
The new enterprises are expected to create more than 14,000 jobs, generate annual output worth 22 trillion soums and increase exports by $510 million. Over the past nine years, the region has attracted $9.5 billion in foreign investment, created more than 6,000 new production capacities and generated 120,000 permanent jobs. The projects also envisage developing 9,000 hectares of land, with the share of high value-added products projected to reach 65% and additional export opportunities expected to total $100 million.
Investment of $2 billion has been attracted to the energy sector in recent years. The region has built wind and solar power plants with capacities of 1,000 megawatts and 750 megawatts respectively, as well as 63 megawatts of energy storage systems, and laid 601 kilometres of main power networks. Construction continues on the 300-megawatt “Bosh-2” wind power plant in Gijduvan district with ACWA participating. Toyota Corporation and Sinoma are building wind power plants with a combined capacity of 1,000 megawatts in Jandar and Peshku districts.
A $165 million facility to generate electricity from household waste is planned in Kagan district with Chinese partners. Another project, valued at $150 million and involving Germany’s Leman, is planned to ensure stable operation of pumping stations on the “Amu-Bukhara” canal. In textiles, a complex under the “Kurt Baver” brand is planned in Bukhara city with annual capacity of 62,000 tonnes of products. A $400 million cotton-textile cluster is also being created in Romitan district with Chinese investors.
Tourism plans include a “Boqiy Buxoro” cultural and ethnographic park, an exhibition hall, hotels and entertainment facilities at Bukhara’s new tourism centre. The city also intends to open hotels under the international Indigo, Holiday Inn and Hilton brands. A total of 19 major tourism projects worth $3 billion are planned in Bukhara. According to the president, the city could generate $5 billion in tourism-services exports if this work is organised systematically.
Over the next five years, the authorities intend to provide the region’s entire population with drinking water and connect major cities and district centres to sewerage networks. Two projects worth a combined $633 million have already begun; they are expected to improve water supply for 2 million residents and give 781,000 people access to drinking water for the first time. Seven road projects worth $565 million are also planned to triple the region’s transit potential. During the visit, Mirziyoyev attended the commissioning ceremony for new facilities, launched construction of prospective projects, heard reports on preparations of Bukhara’s infrastructure for summits planned for 2027 and issued relevant instructions.
